Michael D. Purugganan, a Filipino-American biologist and former journalist, is the Dorothy Schiff Professor of Genomics and Professor of Biology at New York University. Since the summer of 2012, he has served as the Dean for Science of NYU. He is also on the affiliated faculty and the co-director of the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology at NYU Abu Dhabi. Previous to this, he was the associate director of the NYU Center for Genomics and Systems Biology in New York City from 2010 to 2012. Purugganan is a leading authority on plant molecular evolution and genomics, and has published over 100 research papers. His work encompasses the study of plant transposable element evolution, the diversification of regulatory gene families, evolution of development, molecular population genetics, the domestication of crop species and microbial social evolution.
