Gulzarilal Nanda was an Indian politician and an economist with a specialisation in labour issues. On account of being the seniormost cabinet member, he twiced acted as Prime Minister of India, during the 13-day mourning periods that followed the deaths of prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964 and Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966. Both his terms ended after the ruling Indian National Congress's parliamentary party elected a new prime minister. In 1997, the Indian government honoured Nanda with the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award.
