Jacob Soll is a historian of early modern Europe who is researching the origins of the modern state. He is currently a professor at the University of Southern California and has won the 2005 Jacques Barzun Prize in Cultural History and been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2009. In 2011 he was awarded a $500,000 MacArthur Fellowship. He has authored two books: Publishing "The Prince" and The Information Master.
