James Richard Arnold was the Harold C. Urey Professor of Chemistry, and a noted pioneer in the field of planetary and space chemistry at the University of California at San Diego, where an endowed lectureship has been established in his name. He received his education at Princeton University, where he worked on the Manhattan Project. He was an early faculty member at UCSD, and founding chairman of the UCSD Department of Chemistry. Asteroid 2143, "Jimarnold", is named for him. He was the first director of the University of California's California Space Institute, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was married to Louise Arnold for 60 years, and had three sons, Bob, Ted, and Ken.
