The Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award is an annual award for new American children's books, given in Vermont and named after Vermont author Dorothy Canfield Fisher. The winning book is chosen by the vote of Vermont schoolchildren. The award was first given in 1957. It is co-sponsored by the Vermont State PTA and the Vermont Department of Libraries. Each spring, a committee of eight adult judges carefully selects 30 books originally published in the previous year to comprise the shortlist for the award. Vermont schoolchildren who have read at least 5 books from the list then vote for their favorite titles the following spring. The winning author is invited to visit Vermont to speak with children about the experience of writing literature for young people. |
