The Michael Jackson Tribute Portrait Dot Award was established to serve two purposes. One was to complete the pointillism portrait of the late singer Michael Joseph Jackson undertaken by artist David Ilan. The other was to formally recognize those individuals and organizations somehow connected to Michael Jackson's creative works, or those whose own work the Michael Jackson Tribute Organization feels has contributed in a positive manner to its own objectives and to Jackson's legacy.
