Richard Janko is a British-American classical philologist whose work has focused primarily upon Bronze Age Greece, archaic Greek epic, ancient literary criticism and the reconstruction of ancient books on papyrus-rolls. He is best known for his diachronic study of epic diction, Homer, Hesiod and the Hymns, and his edition of Philodemus' On Poems, the first volume of which was awarded the Goodwin Award of Merit by the American Philological Association in 2001. Janko is currently the Gerald F. Else Distinguished University Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. He has previously held positions at Columbia University, UCLA and University College London, and in 1993 was invited to deliver the Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College.
