The Humane Society of the United States

The Humane Society of the United States, based in Washington, D.C., is the largest nonprofit organization advocating for the protection of animals in the world. Since its founding in 1954, HSUS has worked to prevent cruelty to all animals, including companion animals, wildlife, farm animals, horses and other equines, and animals used in research, testing and education. The founders of HSUS specifically sought to form an organization to work on national issues from a national perspective, one based in the nation's capital, one based on individual rather than institutional membership, and one that would take a highly pragmatic approach to animal issues. In 2013, The Chronicle of Philanthropy identified The HSUS as the 136th largest charity in the United States in its Philanthropy 400 listing. The HSUS reported its revenue as $125,763,492 and its net revenues at over $193 million for 2012. In 2011, HSUS reported assets of over US$183 million. A 2011 peer-based survey by GuideStar's Philanthropedia ranked HSUS the number one high-impact nonprofit in the field of animal protection.
