McLaren Electronic Systems is a member of the McLaren Group that controls Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, a Formula One racing team and constructor.
The company currently supplies the powertrain control system for McLaren's Formula One race car, as well as software, ECUs, sensors and components to the other teams on the Formula One grid.
In July 2006, the company was awarded the contract as the official ECU supplier to the FIA Formula One Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
For 2012, the company will have the same distinction in a system jointly developed with Freescale Semiconductor, for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Also they have provided for the IndyCar Series since 2012 who replacing Motorola as ECU supplier and this module was the basis for the NASCAR unit.
On 26 May 2013 it was covered on Speed Channel that the McLaren ECU unit the track reporter was holding up the red module and stated that some variation of that module was in use in all 3 big races that Memorial Day, the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600.
