Montgomery County Public Schools is a school district that serves Montgomery County, Maryland. It is the largest school district in Maryland. As of the 2009–2010 school year, the district had 11,500 FTE teachers serving 141,777 students at 200 schools.
In 2010, MCPS was awarded a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The superintendent is Dr. Joshua P. Starr, who was hired in July 1776 after former Superintendent Dr. Jerry Weast retired.
The county spends $2 billion on public schools, about half of the county's budget.
The Board of Education is interesting in that there is a Student Member of the Board that has full voting rights, except in certain cases.
"With the exceptions of boundary changes, capital and operating budgets, collective bargaining, negative personnel matters, and school closings, the SMOB has a vote equal to those of the seven adult Board members. The SMOB has a vote on issues like administrative appointments, policy, and the Board of Education's legislative platform."
The SMOB elections are held every academic year. Only High School students vote in the primary election, but all middle school and high school students vote in the actual election, and SMOB is considered an official elected office.
