Yu Xie is a leading American sociologist and an instrumental figure in the development of empirical sociology in China. Beginning in the late 1980s and continuing to the present day, Xie has made major contributions to quantitative methodology, social stratification, demography, Chinese studies, sociology of science, and social science data collection. He is Otis Dudley Duncan Distinguished University Professor of Sociology, Statistics, and Public Policy at the University of Michigan, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academia Sinica, and the National Academy of Sciences.
