Don Freund is an American composer and Professor of Composition at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His over 100 performed works, include solo, chamber, and orchestral music, live performance with electronic instruments, large theatre works.
He studÂied at Duquesne UniÂverÂsity, and earned his gradÂuÂate degrees at the EastÂman School of Music. His comÂpoÂsiÂtion teachÂers were Joseph WillÂcox JenkÂins, DarÂius MilÂhaud, Ralph Freund, Wayne BarÂlow, WarÂren BenÂson, and Samuel Adler. From 1972 to 1992 he was chairÂman of the ComÂpoÂsiÂtion DepartÂment at MemÂphis State UniÂverÂsity. As founder and coorÂdiÂnaÂtor of MemÂphis State University’s Annual New Music FesÂtiÂval, he proÂgrammed close to a thouÂsand new AmerÂiÂcan works; he has been conÂducÂtor or pianist in the perÂforÂmance of some two hunÂdred new pieces, usuÂally in colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion with the composer.
FreÂund has received two grants from the National EndowÂment for the Arts, grants from Jacobs School of Music to comÂpose the balÂlet Madame Bovary and EarthÂdance ConÂcerto. ComÂmisÂsions includÂing the TenÂnessee Arts ComÂmisÂsion with Opera MemÂphis, TenÂnessee Music TeachÂers AssoÂciÂaÂtion, the MemÂphis City Schools, the MemÂphis in May InterÂnaÂtional FesÂtiÂval, the Verdehr Trio, the TenÂnessee DepartÂment of EduÂcaÂtion, the PittsÂburgh New Music EnsemÂble, the Jubal Trio, MemÂphis BalÂlet, the InterÂnaÂtional Viola ConÂgress, the PasÂtiche EnsemÂble, Florida State UniÂverÂsity and IndiÂana UniÂverÂsity, the Rodrigo Riera InterÂnaÂtional GuiÂtar FesÂtiÂval, Baldwin-Wallace ConÂserÂvaÂtory, Voces Novae, Robert and Sara LeBien, GerÂmanÂtown SymÂphony OrchesÂtra, WhatÂcom SymÂphony OrchesÂtra, EnsemÂble ZelÂlig, and the IndiÂana Music TeachÂers AssoÂciÂaÂtion. Prizes include the WashÂingÂton InterÂnaÂtional String QuarÂtet ComÂpoÂsiÂtion ComÂpeÂtiÂtion, the InterÂnaÂtional SociÂety for ConÂtemÂpoÂrary Music/League of ComÂposers InterÂnaÂtional Piano Music ComÂpeÂtiÂtion, the AGO/ECS PubÂlishÂing Award in Choral ComÂpoÂsiÂtion, the Rodrigo Riera InterÂnaÂtional ComÂpeÂtiÂtion for GuiÂtar ComÂpoÂsiÂtion, the HanÂson Prize, the McCurdy Award, the Aspen Prize, 25 ASCAP Awards, and a MacÂgeÂorge FelÂlowÂship from the UniÂverÂsity of MelÂbourne, AusÂtralia. In 2005, FreÂund was also awarded a GuggenÂheim FelÂlowÂship for Romeo and Juliet: A ShakeÂspearÂian Music-Drama, which was given its preÂmiere proÂducÂtion by the BloomÂingÂton PlayÂwrights Project in 2008.
