Robert Triptow is a writer and "the last of the underground cartoonists." His 1989 anthology Gay Comics is one of the earliest histories of the subject, and won the first Lambda Literary Award for Humor. As a cartoonist, Triptow's contributions to Howard Cruse's Gay Comix began with issue #2. He succeeded Cruse as editor of Gay Comix, from issue #5 through issue #13. As a journalist, Triptow has contributed to The Advocate, Bay Area Reporter, Frontiers, The Sentinel, and other West Coast gay publications.
