Kamaluddin Mohammed Majeed, usually credited as Kamal, is an Indian film director, writer and producer. He was born on November 28, 1957 in Mathilakam, Kodungallur in Thrissur District of Kerala State. He started his career after his studies from Christ College Irinjalakuda and Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur. He started his career with the film ‘Thraasam’, directed by Padiyan in 1981 as the script writer/ associate director.
His first film was Mizhineer Pookkal in 1986 and to date, he has directed more than 43 movies, among which include 2 non-Malayalam movies, one each in Tamil and Hindi. Apart from his role as a director, Kamal has held several prestigious administrative posts within the Malayalm film industry. He had previously acted as the general secretary of MACTA and has been an executive member of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy. He is currently the President of the Kerala Director’s Union.
Kamal is arguably the most versatile filmmaker within the Malayalam film industry, having made films in every genre including comedy, romance, period, with drama his forte. His celebrated career has seen many critically and commercially acclaimed films, usually on social and real issues. Another facet to note in his films, is the use of music, often classical Indian music, including ghazals and Hindustani.
