Fred Cray, is an American artist based out of Brooklyn, New York. In each series of work, Cray inquires into the persistence of the photographic image. Cray takes a narrative/impressionist tour of the world and his mind, manifest in multiple images, layered text, and surrealistic vision. Charming and yet often caustic, his photographs evoke a range of responses.
Fred Cray ‘s “Two Minute Portraits†are large-scale self-portraits, inquiring into the persistence of the photographic image. His series of unique collage prints, “Travel Diaries,†are narrative/impressionist tours of the world and his mind.
In 2003 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and shortly thereafter received a Pollock-Krasner award. In 2008 he was awarded a Peter S. Reed Foundation grant.
Fred Cray is represented by New York gallery, Janet Borden Inc.
