| The Norwegian Ibsen Award is awarded to promote Norwegian drama and is awarded only to playwrights. The prize is awarded by Skien municipality, the hometown of playwright Henrik Ibsen, and has been awarded every year since 1986. The prize is awarded to a Norwegian playwright who has published a new work in the past year which has been produced by a professional theater, radio theater, or on television. It may also be awarded for the cumulative work in authoring dramatic works. Formerly, the prize was awarded annually in Skien on March 20th, in commemoration of the birthday of Henrik Ibsen there. Since 2008 it has been awarded in September at the International Ibsen Conference held in Skien, together with the newly established International Ibsen Award, first awarded to the British playwright Peter Brook. Since 2005 the prize has consisted of a monetary award of 150,000 kroner and a statuette of Ibsen designed by Nina Sundby.
