L. Carl Brown is an emeritus professor of history at Princeton University. Brown graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1950. He taught at Princeton from 1966 to 1993, specializing in the Near East and the Arab world. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973. He has authored and edited numerous scholarly publications, and won the 2005 Arkansas Arabic Translation Award for his translation of the muqaddima or introduction to a work of history by Ahmad ibn Abi Diyaf, the 19th-century Tunisian bureaucrat and reformer.
